Love would take care of the rest.
In the midst of some technical issues, rather than working on restoring our website, I'm in bed reading Hansel + Gretel. Our little friend Liam brought it over last night for the birthday party. I've been a longtime fan of Jen Corace's illustrations but this book is so beautiful that only I get to turn the pages. Muted jewel tones wash over every picture of delicious chocolate forests of characters with wide-spaced eyes wearing german vintage couture. The dissected trees are layered and rich and foreshadow the darkness to come.
As fairy tales go, if you have the kind of child who makes you spray for monsters, then this might not be the story for you. But, if your kids are ok with the notion of being sent alone to starve in the forest before being eaten for dinner, then gumdrop window shutters may be the perfect dessert.
Surprisingly, you can still buy Jen's prints reasonably on sites like Mahar Drygoods and Art Star.
The book, of course, is available anywhere.
